A new interview campaign shines a spotlight on the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance, turning to the people who know it best. In the first interview, members of the Atlantic Community are asked to define the Alliance in their own words, explaining what the Alliance represents and why it matters.
The All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) exemplifies what can be achieved through unity, collaboration, and shared purpose. The Atlantic Ocean has long served as a bridge, connecting people, culture and ideas. Today, the Alliance embodies that same spirit, linking 13 current member countries, and fostering cooperation along and across the Atlantic.
During the 2025 All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance Forum, held in Brussels in September and organised by the European Commission with the support of the EU-funded OKEANO Coordination and Support Action (CSA), this spirit of collaboration was vividly on display. The Forum brought together policymakers, researchers and community representatives from across the Atlantic, all united by a common goal: to build an inclusive Atlantic community that advances ocean research and promotes sustainable ocean governance. Participants exchanged experiences, presented ideas, and discussed how to build a more inclusive and sustainable Atlantic community. At the heart of the discussions was a shared understanding: the challenges our ocean is facing require collective action and shared solutions. The Forum reaffirmed that cooperation across borders is not only possible but essential.
We seized this occasion to capture the voices that make the All-Atlantic Alliance what it is. Through a series of interviews conducted during this week, a diverse range of participants from high-level board members and experienced researchers to early-career ocean professionals (ECOPs) shared their insights on various topics. These conversations form the foundation of the interviews we’re releasing, starting with the first instalment asking “What is the Alliance?”. This video captures authentic perspectives from those directly involved in building and driving the Alliance forward. Through their words, viewers will hear what the Alliance means to those who are shaping it.
The goal of these interviews is to make the Alliance’s work more visible, transforming complex topics into stories that inspire our broader community. By sharing individual experiences and collective achievements, the campaign highlights how diverse voices across the Atlantic are contributing towards common goals. Through this series, audiences will hear directly from those acting for the Atlantic Ocean, exploring topics such as the Alliance’s main areas of action, perspectives from new and funding members, intergenerational activities and more.
This video marks the first instalment of a broader communication campaign designed to share the vision, goals and achievements of AAORIA through the words of those shaping it. Stay tuned as we release more interviews in the upcoming weeks, celebrating the diversity and dedication of the All-Atlantic community.
By making the Alliance’s people and purpose more visible, we aim to strengthen engagement across all member countries, inspiring others to join our collective effort for a thriving Atlantic Ocean.
