Save the Ocean, Protect the Future

This year, Lisbon will host one of the most important ocean events where worldwide actors, stakeholders and social partners will gather for discussing and working on science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.

The UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, will be held from the 27th of June to the 1st of July in Lisbon, in a hybrid format. The conference will have an official programme and many exciting side events that will engage and empower citizens to collaborate to “Protect Marine Life” (SDG14) and regenerate the planet.

The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021 – 2030 provides a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support countries’ actions to sustainably manage the ocean and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, across the science-policy interface. The many concrete actions under the UN Decade of Ocean Science aim at strengthening the management of the ocean and coasts for the future of our ocean and the benefit of humanity.

The challenges identified in the UN Decade of Ocean Science are cross-cutting to the entire ocean and have at its core the societal benefits of the sustainable use of the ocean. The societal impact is also key to the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance cooperation. Through its thematic areas, promotion of ocean knowledge exchange and cooperative activities from pole to pole, the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance is strongly contributing to tackling those challenges which have been identified in the UN Decade of Ocean Science, serving as a model for an enlarged cooperation in Ocean Research and Innovation in the world, and taking further the Alliance’s motto “Connecting-Acting-Cooperating”.

The Conference will be a great opportunity to showcase the work done so far by the community of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance and call on board other actors and stakeholders to work together for achieving the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
