ATLANTIC OCEAN RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Working groups

The Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance Coordination and Support Action (AORA-CSA) was designed to provide scientific, technical and logistical support to the European Commission in developing and implementing trans-Atlantic Marine Research Cooperation between the European Union, the United States of America and Canada under the Galway Statement. Under this programme, five Working Groups focus on different cooperation areas have been created to define mutual research topics and enhance collaboration.

After the end of AORA-CSA, the Working Groups are still carrying out activities and enlarging their network, contributing to the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance ambitions.

Marine Microbiome Working Group
The Marine Microbiome Working Group working group is comprised of marine microbiome researchers from Canada, the European Union, and the United States of America. New insights on the significance of the microscopic scale of ocean life has shown this level affects almost every aspect of our lives (health, food, industry, ecosystems). For society’s future, we need to investigate the science of marine microbiomes, integrate the novel technologies discovered and initiate policies that foster truly sustainable marine development.
Atlantic Seabed Mapping International Working Group (ASMIWG)
The Atlantic Seabed Mapping International Working Group (ASMIWG) has been established in December 2014 at the Atlantic Seabed Mapping Workshop held in Dublin as part of the implementation of the Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation. The aim of the WG is to leverage existing ocean exploration knowledge, infrastructure and programmes, integrate mapping, observation and forecasting initiatives, communicating and sharing of best practice and action on survey planning.
Ocean Literacy Working Group

The AORA Ocean Literacy Working Group seeks alignment and collaboration among key strategic partners working among Canada, the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) to support implementation of Transatlantic Ocean Literacy as conceptualized in the Galway Statement.

The vision of this AORA working group is “A society in which citizens are ocean literate and adapt their everyday behaviour to make informed and responsible decisions that promote ocean stewardship in a co-creation approach.”
Aquaculture Working Group
The overarching objective of the AORA Aquaculture Working Group is to facilitate enhanced scientific cooperation, information sharing and collaboration on common sustainable aquaculture questions to increase the overall scientific knowledge and support an ecosystem-approach to the management of aquaculture.
Atlantic Seafloor Partnership for Integrated Research and Exploration (ASPIRE)
The Atlantic Seafloor Partnership for Integrated Research and Exploration, or ASPIRE, is a major multi-year, multi-national collaborative ocean exploration field program focused on raising collective knowledge and understanding of the North Atlantic Ocean
