25 new Youth Ambassadors are ready to promote sustainable development and stewardship of the Atlantic Ocean!

In August 2019, the Co-Chairs of the Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation and the Belém Statement on Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Cooperation launched the All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors programme to enable the next generation to become actors of change in their communities, by promoting stewardship of the sustainable development of the Atlantic Ocean. The ultimate objective is to build an Atlantic Community of a fully engaged young generation to create a groundswell of activism to support an Ocean aware society.

Following the positive impact of the first group of All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors, the second cohort of young ocean enthusiasts were announced during the 3rd All-Atlantic Ocean Research Forum, which took place virtually on 3-4 December 2020, hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation, in South Africa in cooperation with the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission. 25 new Youth Ambassadors were selected by  All-Atlantic partners coming from 14 different countries spanning the Atlantic Ocean: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America.

The All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors are dedicated individuals who promote the sustainable development and stewardship of the Atlantic Ocean. They are currently either in training or education programmes or in the early stages of their careers. In a pre-recorded video broadcasted at the Forum, the new Youth Ambassadors presented themselves and shared their vision for the Ocean, including: promoting fair and sustainable practices for present and future generations, climate mitigation and resilience, working to connect people to the sea and raise awareness on sustainable living, strengthen science-community dialogue and collaboration, and finding creative new solutions to achieve a healthy and sustainable ocean.

Within the context of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance, the Ambassadors will be involved in the activities of the newly launched Joint Actions under the Horizon 2020 AANChOR project and will develop communication strategies to reach out to local communities, students and civil society, engage decision makers as well as work with local media to conserve and protect the Atlantic Ocean for future generations. The All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors will be integrated into the collaborative Atlantic pilot actions and supported by other All-Atlantic research and innovation projects.

The All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors will take part in All-Atlantic Induction Training, taking place virtually in February 2021. Additionally, they are planning to participate in a Summer School on the Azores in June 2021, depending on the Covid-19 situation.

In an exciting new development, twelve former Youth Ambassadors have kindly agreed to stay on-board as Mentors for the new cohort of Ambassadors. In their new role, they will use their experience gained during their time as Youth Ambassadors to support and advise the new cohort as they navigate their new voyage.
