Launch of the All Atlantic Ocean Initiative

Over 29 participants representing ministries, funding agencies, public authorities research and outreach institutions from 10 countries of 3 continents, gathered in Brussels, Belgium to kick-off a new EU Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support project AAANChOR – All AtlaNtic Cooperation for Ocean Research and Innovation.

Much more than project, AANcHOR is in fact the main current instrument to support the implementation of the Belém Statement, with the goal of Building the All Atlantic Ocean Research Community, to best unlock the Atlantic Ocean secrets and to ensure the sustainable management of the Atlantic Ocean as a whole.

By bringing together and systematically connect all relevant actors across the Atlantic Ocean, the AANChOR project, led by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal, will launch the All Atlantic Ocean Initiative, aiming at identifying concrete collaborative research and innovation activities with a long-lasting potential and impact across a range of six key areas:

  • Climate Variability
  • Ocean Observation
  • Ocean Resources
  • Ocean Technology
  • Emerging Pollutants
  • Polar Research.
