ECOPs Legacy
The All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors Programme
The ECOP engagement efforts build on the legacy of the All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors Programme, active from 2019 to 2022. Launched by the Co-Chairs of the Galway and Belém Statements, this programme empowered young professionals to advocate for sustainable development and ocean stewardship within their communities. The first cohort of Youth Ambassadors participated in a Summer School organized by the AORA CSA in Galway in 2019, leading to the launch of the All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Forum in Brussels in February 2020, spearheaded by European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel. This forum aimed to integrate early-career ocean professionals into the broader All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance, enhancing science, citizen engagement, communication, and outreach.
A second cohort was introduced during the 3rd All-Atlantic Forum held online on December 3-4, 2020, continuing the mission of promoting sustainable ocean stewardship and engaging with various stakeholders. The campaigns and activities of these Ambassadors were documented and shared through social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram #AtlanticAll #AtlanticYouth).
Though the Youth Ambassadors Programme is no longer active, its legacy endures through the ongoing efforts of its participants, who remain involved in AAORIA and committed to sustainable ocean stewardship and the promotion of a healthy Atlantic Ocean.
