2018 Salvador da Bahia - Concept note

Seeking to reaffirm the importance of research in and on the oceans, forming the basis of the strategic marine research partnership maintained between Brazil, South Africa and the European Union and taking into account the signing of the Belém Statement Atlantic Research and Innovation in July 2017, in Lisbon, Portugal, which established a trilateral partnership to promote broader transatlantic research cooperation, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications of Brazil, with the support of the Federal University of Bahia, hosted the Belém All-Atlantic Research Forum on 23-24 July 2018 in the remarkable city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

By initiating a broad research forum on research across the entire Atlantic Ocean, this meeting advances the implementation of the Belém Statement and deepens the partnership with the European Commission and the Department of Science and Technology of South Africa.

The Forum programme was focused on three main themes:

  • Reflections on existing and planned cooperative research and innovation activities within the framework of the Belém Partnership to demonstrate its scope.
  • Discussions on the socioeconomic and political impact of Atlantic Ocean research initiatives, emphasizing the imperative for the Belém Partnership to demonstrate material impact, in addition to generating excellence in science.
  • Deliberations on specifically focused interventions where the Partnership should consider and prioritize within the framework established by the Belém Statement.

The Partnership is convinced that further scientifically-based joint management of the extension of the Atlantic Ocean – from the South to the North, from the East to the West – is the safest way to promote its sustainable use. The establishment of this Forum and its regular meetings are a key contribution to this macro-level ambition.
