The purpose of the WILDOCEANS programme speaks directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (RIO+20) of the Blue Economy advanced by the United Nations: “improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities”. In developing the WILDOCEANS programme we see need for strategic action and innovative partnerships to support government and communities to take advantage of services that healthy oceans offer and improve the livelihoods of coastal communities, while protecting marine ecosystems and working to restore natural resources to a more productive state.
