Indian Ocean Global Ocean Observing System Regional Alliance (IOGOOS) was formally established on November 5, 2002. The IOGOOS members agreed to collaborate and work together for the implementation of GOOS in the Indian Ocean and for promoting activities of common interest for the development of operational oceanography in the Indian Ocean region. The aims of IOGOOS are to (1) contribute collectively to ocean observations, ocean science and operational oceanography; (2) enhance ocean observing system in the region; promote management, exchange and utilisation of oceanographic data; (3) strengthen capacity building for enhancing capabilities in the region; (4) encourage research to support the needs of the end users; (5) develop synergies with other ocean programmes and GOOS bodies.
