The Benguela Current Convention Large Marine Ecosystem Programme (BCLME) extends from east of the Cape of Good Hope, northwards to Cabinda Province in Angola and encompasses the full extent of Namibia’s marine environment. It is a major coastal upwelling ecosystem and an important centre of marine biodiversity and marine food production. The mission of BCLME is to promote, coordinate and implement the sustainable development of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem. Its Key Performance Areas are the: (a) Provision of best available scientific advice; Sustainable exploitation and management of living marine resources; Responsible exploitation and management of non-living marine resources; (b) Conservation of biodiversity, habitats, environmental goods and services and ecosystem functions and processes; (c) Prevention and mitigation of acute and chronic pollution; (d) Sufficient human, institutional and financial resources to achieve the objectives of the Convention; (e) Transformation, training and capacity building. BCLME goes in its third phase of implementation (BCLME III).
