The WYTEC Blue project, which ran from January 2022 to March 2024, focused on growing technical capacity in Ocean Technology (OT) and Maritime Safety and Risk Management (MSRM) among women and youth in Canada and West Africa. In the inaugural cohort, we successfully trained 41 participants from Nova Scotia (Canada), Mindelo (Cabo Verde), and Accra (Ghana), with 63% of them being young women. The program provided courses designed to equip participants with a critical understanding of the skills needed to thrive in the blue economy, along with important leadership and entrepreneurship tools. Future plans involve scaling the program, expanding collaborations, and developing a larger training initiative, including a potential Masters-level program in West Africa. We welcome others to join our efforts in empowering communities for a sustainable blue economy.
