The Global Ocean Literacy Initiative (GOLI) is a group of young maritime professionals around the globe who envisioned the establishment of a non-governmental global advocacy initiative aimed at promoting sustainable stewardship of the ocean. The initiative focuses on literacy as its core principle but also incorporates multidisciplinary bottom-to-top approaches to drive actionable plans for the preservation of ocean health. This urgent need to educate future generations on the importance of a healthy ocean is necessitated by the crucial role it plays in supporting life and regulating the climate. Leveraging the global network of World Maritime University and Sasakawa students and alumni, GOLI aims to engage and inspire the younger generation in actionable conversations about the ocean and its resources while it also interphases with policy-makers in the formulation of requisite pro-ocean policies especially but not limited to developing countries.
