Challenger 150

Challenger 150

Challenger 150 is UN Ocean Decade global programme dedicated to advancing knowledge of life in the deep ocean and building capacity for deep-sea science. The programme is an open cooperative where researchers coordinate their science via 12 regional scientific research working groups focused on specific ocean basins. These are supported by technical working groups dealing with issues of standardisation, and the African Network of Deep-water Researchers, focused on capacity building.  In the Atlantic there are three working groups: North Atlantic, the Central and South Atlantic, and the Western Tropical Atlantic covering the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Collectively they have produced reviews of current biological knowledge of the deep Atlantic in scientific publications, developed biological habitat maps of the Atlantic seafloor, and developed a plan for high resolution ecosystem mapping of the Atlantic that we will now take forward.
