On the 9th and 10th of November 2021 researchers from 11 institutions across Africa, Europe, and South America attended the He(Art) of Research public speaking workshop facilitated by Jive Media Africa, coming out of the experience with a new set of skills, and a 90-second video showcasing their research. The workshop has been organised by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and SAEON, South Africa, in the scope of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance, and under the EU-funded project AANChOR CSA.
Tailored for a general public audience, these videos increase ocean literacy, awareness, and visibility of research and innovation carried across the Atlantic Ocean by the participants. Topics included food security and fisheries management, marine pollution, and deep-sea ocean technology.
Participants were mentored and trained by Jive Media Africa through a step-by-step process of delivering an engaging spark talk using simple narrative and compelling storytelling techniques. The workshop included presentations on how images and video can be used to capture an audience’s attention and draw them into a research story, and how these creative approaches can be leveraged for science communication on social media.
Coached on content and delivery, visual setup, and lighting by Jive Media Africa, each researcher was then ready to prepare a 90-second video where they shared their science through storytelling.
Stay tuned for the release of the first video and dive with us into science storytelling!
