A vision for ecosystem-based management in the North Atlantic Ocean

Recognizing that the Atlantic Ocean is a shared resource and responsibility, a new vision paper contributes to the implementation of the All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance.

The Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance Working Group on the Ecosystem Approach to Ocean Health and Stressors (AORA EA2OHS) is a trilateral working group (Canada/European Union/United States) that was formed in scope of the Galway Statement implementation to promote research to understand the North Atlantic Ocean in support of ecosystem-based management.

This group has just launch a vision paper which is to act as a roadmap for an international science plan on research directions, priorities, synergies, and complementarities in the North Atlantic. The document was developed to address challenges identified for further implementation of ecosystem-based management. The plan covers:

  • Development of a common language as a basis for collaboration,
  • Stakeholder engagement,
  • Review of governance mandates,
  • Linking sector and ecosystems effects,
  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and uptake of science,
  • Identification of tools for ecosystem-based management, and
  • Communication of key research priorities.
