SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES IN SW ATLANTIC: A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH

The international conference SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES IN SW ATLANTIC: A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH took place online on March 4th, 2021 and promoted by H2020 funded project FarFish. It was attended by representatives from international organizations such as FAO and the LDAC, as well as the General Directorate of Sustainable Fisheries, the General Sub-directorate of Agreements and Regional Fisheries Organizations, the General Sub-directorate of Fisheries Surveillance and Fight Against Illegal Fishing, the General Sub-directorate of Legal Affairs and International Fisheries Governance, national and international fishing operators, NGOs and scientists from different European countries

The conference drew upon recent science-based advances and challenges in fisheries management and stock assessments within the SW Atlantic (FAO Major Fishing Area 41). Bringing together fisheries scientists, policymakers, operators, and other stakeholders, the conference aimed to present and discuss recent scientific findings and to highlight the status and management challenges in these waters. Within three thematic sessions, presenters and panellists discussed how recent scientific initiatives, findings, and collaborations can enhance our understanding of the state of these waters and advance management and compliance practices.
