Initiative Type: Projects
BeleĢm Statement Area: Climate Variability, Ocean Observation, Emerging Pollutants, Ocean Technology, Ocean Resources
Initiative Location: Brazil
Time Frame: 2017-2020
Description:
SiMCosta is an integrated system of platforms (eg floating, fixed) that collects and makes available high quality data online to the scientific community and users in general. The following weather variables are measured by SiMCosta: solar radiation, wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure and CO2 concentration. In the case of seawater, the sensors are pressure, conductivity, temperature, stimulated fluorescence, pH, turbidity, color dissolved organic matter, speed and direction of currents, waves and sea level height. Sea level is measured by seafaring stations with altimetric radar. The stations will have their reference levels continuously monitored by IBGE High Precision Altimetric Network. Therefore, consequences of sea level rise can be easily identified and mapped in the coastal region. SiMCosta will also be integrated with the Brazilian Oceanographic Monitoring System (SIBRAMOC), by means of the Fixed Buoys Monitoring Network (PNBOIA), INCT of Marine Sciences - Integrated Oceanography Center (INCT-Mar COI) and INCT for Climate Change (INCT-MC).
