The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA) aims to improve the long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, in protected areas and surrounding communities. It is an initiative of the ACP Group of States financed by the European Union’s 11th European Development Fund (EDF), jointly implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC). The EU aims to contribute to the sustainable management of the environment and natural resources in ACP nations. Specific issues include: tackling biodiversity loss, combatting desertification, arresting deforestation and halting the depletion of fish stocks. The EU is also helping ACP countries mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change and prevent natural disasters, as a major contribution to the Commission’s Action Plan for Resilience in Crisis Prone Countries (2013-2020).
