Oceanography is the official magazine of the Oceanography Society. It contains peer-reviewed articles that chronicle all aspects of ocean science and its applications;. This magazine is published four times a year in online and paper format.
This March 2025 special issue of Oceanography is titled A Vision for Capacity Sharing in the Ocean Sciences It features a collection of insightful articles exploring how global ocean research can be more inclusive, collaborative, and impactful.
Among them is a key piece that directly relates to the work of the All-Atlantic Training Platform (AA-TP) under the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) through AANChOR, titled “Boosting the South: A Vision for an All-Atlantic Training Platform“.
This article argues that true progress in ocean science requires equitable, cross-regional collaboration, especially between the North and South Atlantic. While the North Atlantic benefits from a strong network of long-established scientific and management bodies, the South Atlantic still lacks sustained, structured cooperation — and this gap hinders scientific progress across the entire Atlantic basin. To bridge this divide, the authors propose a dedicated platform for capacity development: the All-Atlantic Training Platform (AA-TP). Key training initiatives include “Floating Universities“, the interdisciplinary ship-based training for early-career researchers — the @SeaNetwork has already begun implementing this model. While policy frameworks like the Galway (2013) and Belém (2017) Statements set the stage for cooperation, the article warns that real, sustained implementation is still lacking — especially in the South Atlantic.
