Brazil announced it will become the first country in the world to include ocean literacy in its national school curriculum, through an initiative called the “Blue Curriculum”. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Luciana Santos, and the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Education (MEC), Gregório Grisa, during the International Forum “Blue Curriculum: International Experiences in Education and Ocean Literacy for Climate Resilience” in Brasília.
This move aims to raise awareness about the importance of the oceans, which cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface, and to integrate ocean-related knowledge into education to foster a more informed and climate-resilient society.
Ronaldo Christofoletti, co-chair of UNESCO’s Ocean Literacy Expert Group, highlighted Brazil’s leadership in this area and the importance of educating future professionals across all disciplines. Ronaldo was also a pioneer in the All-Atlantic Blue Schools Network (AA-BSN), one of the six AANChOR’s Joint Pilot Action developed to contribute to the implementation of the Belém Statement.
