Description

From 2009 to date, the Puerto Deseado Oceanographic Vessel (BOPD) has campaigned on various topics such as ecology of marine biodiversity, census of birds, fish and crustaceans, marine geology-seismic lines, microbial biodiversity, tidal and current studies from the coasts of Brazil to the Beagle canal. More than 250 researchers and professionals from Universities and Research Institutes from across the country have participated. It should be noted that the BOPD is a fundamental tool for the National Commission of the External Boundary of the Continental Shelf (COPLA) of the Argentine Chancellery, which is precisely tasked with setting the external limit of the Continental Platform Argentina. The Ship also contributes to south Atlantic Southern Overturning Circulation (SAMOC) campaigns to advance understanding the effects of global change and climate variability on ocean, atmospheric and terrestrial ecosystems in the western South Atlantic sector. Periodically, together with the National Directorate of Antarctica and its Argentine Antarctic Institute (IAA), the Antarctic Summer Campaign is held in which around 90 researchers participate in the scheduled sections.
