The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) was established in September 2016 through a partnership led by Dalhousie University, Memorial University and the University of Prince Edward Island. An international hub for ocean research, OFI brings together experts from both sides of the North Atlantic to explore the vast potential of the ocean. The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) is focused on understanding key aspects of ocean and ecosystem change and developing strategic and effective solutions that can be applied both locally and globally. OFI’s aim is to conduct research that advances policy decisions and advances the development of a blue — and sustainable — economy. OFI’s ocean research focuses on: (A) Changes — research examines key aspects of atmosphere-ocean interaction, resulting ocean dynamics, and shifting ecosystems and (B) Solutions — research focuses on effective approaches to resource development that are sustainable, globally competitive, societally acceptable and resilient to change. OFI research will help: (1) improve prediction and mitigation of major storms; (2) manage human activities as they relate to ocean resources; (3) improve the potential for fisheries and aquaculture industries to meet global seafood demand in a sustainable manner; (4) strengthen marine safety; (5) transform how we monitor the ocean with new data capture and IT tools.
